It’s the Law: Don’t Robo Call My Cell Phone
As of two days ago, it’s illegal in Missouri for telemarketers to call your cell phone…if you register your number on the no call list.
Thanks to House Bill 1549, which Governor Jay Nixon signed in to law on June 14, 2012, unwanted calls and text messages can be cut off at the source: the telemarketers.
By my reading of the law, spamming someone’s fax machine is illegal too.
Sadly, like the landline No Call Law, this new restriction applies only to personal phones, not those used primarily for business.
You can sign up here. Or call 866-662-2551.
Over 61,000 cell phones were registered on the no call list the first day it was open to mobile devices.
You do not need a Missouri area code to register. But you do need a Missouri address.
Since the registry updates the telemarketers on a quarterly basis, if you sign up today, the restrictions will not go into effect until January 1, 2013.
The Federal Do Not Call registry has included cell phones since 2003.
By the way, charities are exempt. So you won’t get any help if you report them.
If you want to report a telemarketer who’s violating the law, you can do it on line here.
The Missouri Attorney General’s Office receives an average of 89 reports each day.
